Football clubs are much more than just 11 blokes kicking a ball against the opposition on a Saturday afternoon.
They are also businesses, employers, and customers. They reach out to help in schools providing positive role models. They work with disadvantaged young people providing purpose to their lives. They are part of the community, playing an active part.
Respect is highly regarded. Players learn to respect the club, respect the coach and Directors and as importantly respect the fans who pay their wages. They respect each other.
Watching these young people after the match, dressed smartly, holding their heads up high having performed to their very best in a competitive match is fantastic.
Cambridge United is one of the finest community based football clubs in the country. It is not wealthy, far from it. But it understands the value of being an honest, we’ll run and community based organisation.
We must protect such clubs or we lose something very special at our peril.
