Over the years, many thousands of people with few or no qualifications have served in the police with distinction. They have attributes you won’t find on a university course: commitment, bravery, common-sense.
Whilst it is helpful to have some officers with degrees what we need is a mix. A mix of brave, solid, grounded individuals prepared to put the public before their own safety.
We have witnessed industry suffering from a lack practical workers who have completed apprenticeships. Instead we have seen our universities churn out young people with degrees that are sometimes not as useful as they could be.
We can’t afford this experiment to leave our police service bereft of effective police officers.
