Question 19 How should the lack of women and people from minority groups be addressed? My answers to the 20 questions asked of PCC candidates

Question 19

There are very few women or people from minority ethnic groups standing as PCC candidates and even fewer are likely to be elected.  How do you think this stark underrepresentation might be addressed?

This role suffers in the same way that local councils do. I don’t pretend to understand why it has been so hard to attract a wide range of candidates from all backgrounds.

We must try to make the role more attractive to everyone. I don’t think that the £5k deposit helps nor the requirement to get 100 signatures on the nomination form.

Quotas or positive discrimination is not the answer.
