A Personal Update – My Candidacy for County Council

Over the past few weeks there has been a great deal of discussion about local government reorganisation and the changing election timetable. Alongside that, I wanted to share a clear update about my own position. Potentially a very busy time ahead!

My Current Role

I am proud to serve as a district councillor on West Suffolk Council, representing the Clare, Hundon and Kedington Ward.

It has been a privilege to work on local issues affecting our villages — from planning matters and housing, to community projects, environmental concerns and supporting parish councils.

Standing for Suffolk County Council – May 2026

Following the Government’s decision to proceed with county elections, I have taken the decision to stand for election to Suffolk County Council on 7 May 2026.

I will be the Conservative candidate for the Haverhill East and Rural Division, which includes:

• Hundon

• Kedington

• Barnardiston

• Parts of Haverhill East and surrounding rural communities

Importantly, this means that Hundon, Kedington and Barnardiston remain at the heart of my work, as they are included in both my current district ward and the county division I am seeking to represent.

Why I Am Standing

With local government potentially moving towards a single unitary authority in 2027, the next year will be an important one.

County council decisions affect:

• Highways and road maintenance

• Adult and children’s social care

• Education

• Libraries

• Public health

• Fire and rescue services

I believe it is important that our rural villages have a strong, experienced voice at county level during what may be a period of significant transition. In the past I was the Leader of Cambridgeshire County Council so have a good grasp of both county and district council issues.

My background in public service and community leadership has always been about practical delivery — making sure services work and taxpayers’ money is used responsibly.

What Happens If Elected?

If elected to Suffolk County Council in May 2026:

• I would serve as a county councillor for Haverhill East and Rural

• District council elections would follow in May 2027

• If a new unitary authority proceeds, elections will also be in May 2027. That first year would be a shadow year before full transition

There are still uncertainties around how and when structural changes will take place. But what does not change is my commitment to represent local residents clearly and robustly.

A Continued Commitment to Clare, Hundon, Kedington and the Wider Area

Whether at district or county level, my focus remains the same:

• Standing up for rural communities

• Protecting local services

• Ensuring proper infrastructure

• Supporting responsible development

• Keeping council tax as low as possible

The coming year will be important for Suffolk. I am ready to step up to ensure our area is properly represented during this period of change.
