Labour’s rent control proposal

This is another short-term political gimmick. Evidence from around the world shows that in the long-term, rent controls lead to poorer quality homes, fewer homes available to rent and ultimately higher rents. That makes life harder for young people looking for somewhere to rent. Even Labour’s own Housing Minister says rent controls ‘will not work in practice.’
We are providing incentives so that more homes for rent are built, and we’re promoting longer-term tenancies, giving families more security and stability.

But the only way to raise people’s living standards properly is to grow the economy, cut taxes and create jobs. We have a long-term economic plan to do that. Labour don’t. All they offer is more spending, more borrowing and more taxes which would put the recovery at risk, jobs at risk and hardworking families’ security at risk
