Grass cutting is much more complex than you might think. The public realm is owned by lots of different organisations, West Suffolk Council, County Council, Parish and Town Councils. West Suffolk Council cuts lots of it much of it on behalf of others.
There are play areas, community areas, road splays, verges and of course cemeteries amongst other things. Some areas require more cutting than others. Some areas locals don’t want cutting to help the wildlife. Most areas don’t get cut enough in the growing season. Lots of areas cut but not strimmed sufficiently.
Our staff work hard but it just is not good enough at the moment.
I am calling on the new Leadership of West Suffolk Council to put in place a comprehensive review of all grass cutting operations. It needs to start at the beginning and work its way down. Should we be cutting grass? How often? Where? How is it funded? Are we charging customers correctly? Are we resourcing the operation sufficiently?
What do local people want – the most important question?
This might be a challenge.
Happy to talk with you about how we can progress this discussion for Hundon. With the allotment field, although our volunteers maintain multiple pathways for the benefit of the community, we actively conserve areas of long grass for wildlife.
Safety must be a priority – road visibility etc, but if we can help wildlife we should.
Hundon Parish Council and Hundon Allotment Tenants’ Association and the Hundon Nature Recovery Network will, I’m sure, work constructively with you on this
