A number of residents asked to meet with me today to discuss the flooding. Most of the, live in Cavendish which seems particularly badly hit.

There is deep water across the road coming from Clare. Passable with extreme care I guess in my 4X4 but I would not risk anything much lower. Some folk don’t seem to under stand that driving too quickly through water creates a bow wave that risks flooding their own engine and pushes water over the pavements into peoples houses. We must all drive slowly!!!
The road is also flooded coming into Cavendish from Long Medford by the Glemsford turning. I had a chat with the fire brigade who were attending a stranded motorist on the Pentlow road. You know it is serious when they were deploying a boat!!
Mill Lane was underwater and impassable.

I met a number of residents all with their own stories to tell. It seems the flooding feels a little different than in the past. Many factors come into play. The Environment Agency and how it manages the waterways, how Highways manage the drains and gullies and the farmers and their land management. None of which we are going to fix very soon.
One lady had water pouring off the fields along the road and swamping her house, other houses along the same road were unaffected! Villagers came out to help using tarpaulins and the gravel from her drive.
Wow, we were lucky, then in the very early morning in a 4×4. There was just a little flooding then at the spot you mention.

Dear Nick,
It’s heart breaking to see so many people in totally impossible situations with no constructive help on the horizon. So many villages are badly flooded. I understand that Suffolk County Council doesn’t even provide free sandbags. People are expected to purchase their own from somewhere. I also understand that there is no Suffolk flood plan in place. I hope that you will be able to make positive moves in this direction. So many people are suffering because of the flooding. I live in Lavenham and drive to work in Clare each day. It is totally unacceptable that Suffolk County Council and local councils have not been insisting on and participating in regular dredging of water ways and regular clearance of drains like they used to. I have lived in Suffolk for over 30 years and never seen such flooding. I hope you can help.
Jane
