I have long campaigned to simplify local councils. We have too many of them, there is too much duplication and it is too complex. Each council has a chief executive on a huge salary to say nothing of the executive team that supports each one.
It seems change is afoot from an unlikely source. Labour is proposing getting rid of district councils with the county council taking on the roles.
Historically, county councils have been drained of cash by adult service care and children services resulting in less money for highways. On the other hand district councils always seem to have plenty of money available.
Most people have no idea which council does what so simplifying things to just one council makes sense. At the moment district councils collect your waste but the county council manages the waste. Barmy.
Labour have my full support making this important change. Let’s hope they don’t foul it up.
The way certain functions are allocated to local government is strange. On the one hand bin collections and would seem to be a natural for the County councils. But importantly, I believe that the planning function should remain with the more locally based district councils, otherwise residents will feel disenfranchised from local decision making.
