Today it was my privilege to be part of a ceremony in the Shire Hall chamber at which six fantastic individuals were awarded the British Empire Medal. I read out one of the citations for a gentleman who had been a parish councillor since 1964, and had contributed in so many different ways to his community.

They had all given huge service to the community, often over many years. Great that they have been recognised.

The BEM was reinstated as an award in 2012.
